Your first redaction
Updated 6 Aug 2026 · Applies to Omitly 2.3.4+ · macOS (Apple silicon) & Windows
Here’s the whole workflow, start to finish. It takes a few minutes and nothing leaves your computer.
Redact a document
- Open a PDF. Launch Omitly and open the document you want to redact — it opens locally, with no upload.
- Mark what to remove. Drag to draw a box over anything you want removed — text, an image, a signature. See Select text, areas and pages to redact for the other ways to mark content, including the automatic personal-info detector and whole-page redaction.
- Review before you apply. Check every mark is where you intend — this is your last chance to adjust it. See Review your redactions before saving.
- Apply & verify. Omitly asks where to save the output (it defaults to the
original’s name with
.redactedadded, in the same folder — you can change either), then removes the underlying content in each marked region, independently verifies it’s gone, writes the redacted PDF, and embeds a signed audit report inside it — all in this one step. - Export the certificate if you want a standalone one-page proof to hand over alongside the file.
What you end up with
A redacted PDF where the removed content is actually absent from the file — not hidden under a box — plus an embedded, checkable record of what was removed. See How Omitly removes text permanently and How to verify a redacted PDF.
